HOW TO BE A "CIM ORU RUNNER"
1.

Register On Line.
2. Email run@TheRelay.com notifying ORU of your participation, especially if you raise more than $1,000 so that we may reserve your spot at the Saturday dinner (5:30 pm) at Hanger 17.
3. Send an email to family and friends soliciting their support (see below).
4. Bring donations to the ORU booth at CIM'S NordicTrack Sports and Fitness Expo.
Getting Started is Easy
There are two proven methods to raise money while preparing for CIM.
One method targets the Charitable Matching Programs offered by many corporations. These companies will match the entry fee and/or donations to ORU. Runners, relay team captains, walkers and volunteers have utilized this method successfully with minimal effort.
The second method, soliciting friends, relatives and coworkers, is preferred by ORU.
1. Contacting others furthers the message about the need for organ donors.
2. Contacts are invited to become runners, walkers or volunteers.
3. Runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters receive a well-deserved pat on the back by letting others know they are supporting a cause.
4. Humorous training stories are entertaining.
Soliciting Family and Friends is Gratifying
(because people want to know you are supporting a cause).
Please consider emailing three paragraphs to your contacts (see sample
below).
1. Inform readers that you dedicating your 26.2 miles to 98,000 Americans waiting for organ donors.
2. Tell readers they can be enormous support by discussing their wishes regarding organ donation with family so loved ones may make an informed decision to donate organs.
3. Conclude by stating that donations (of time, money or organs!) are acceptable.
Sample Email or Letter (may be copied and personalized)
Dear ...,
In December, I will be running the California International Marathon from Folsom, CA to the State Capitol Building in Sacramento promoting organ donation as a member of the Organs 'R' Us team. The challenge of running 26.2 miles is symbolic of the challenges that transplant candidates face. The bodies of most waiting for organs run a marathon each day to survive. The 2007 run is dedicated to three-year-old Katalina Thang of San Jose who received a heart lung transplant in 2006.
Please help in a big way by discussing organ donation with your family members. This will allow your loved ones to make an informed decision if they are ever faced with donating your organ.
Thanks in advance for your support of 98,000 Americans waiting for organ transplants.
PS Donations of money, organs! or time (volunteers are needed) are accepted by Organs 'R' Us, 501 (c) (3) Tax ID 94-3333306, 570 El Camino Real, Suite 150-330, Redwood City, CA 94063. Please write my name on your check.
